Before you enquire
Does it work on any piano?
Self-play can be retrofitted to most acoustic pianos — uprights and grands, any brand. We assess each instrument before confirming. If there’s any reason it won’t work, we tell you before you commit.
Nobody in our household plays. Does that matter?
No. That’s precisely what self-play is for. The piano performs whether or not anyone sits at the keys. A library of pieces, playable at any moment, from an iPad.
Will the retrofit damage the piano?
No. The system is fitted without altering the instrument’s structure or its sound when played by hand. Nothing is removed or permanently changed. If you ever wanted it reversed, it can be.
Can I have my piano resprayed without adding self-play?
Yes. The finish work stands entirely on its own — plenty of clients come to us purely for a respray, with no self-play involved.
How long does the whole process take?
Fifteen days, door to door — from collection at your home, through the workshop, to delivery and set-up back in your room.
How does pricing and payment work?
Self-play starts from £15,000, fitted to the piano you already own. The exact price depends on your model and condition, and any finish work is quoted separately once we’ve seen the piano. We typically ask for a deposit to secure your slot, with the balance due on completion — and we’re happy to discuss financing or a staged payment plan if that helps.
What if I want to sell the piano later?
Self-play is reversible and, for the right buyer, can be a point of interest rather than a drawback. We’re happy to talk through resale considerations before you commit.
Will it affect tuning?
No. The self-play mechanism doesn’t touch the strings, soundboard or tuning pins — your piano is tuned exactly as before, and normal tuning maintenance continues as usual.
How noisy is the mechanism?
Very little beyond the piano’s own sound. The solenoids that move the keys are near-silent in operation — what you hear is the piano itself, not a motor.
Can I still play it normally, by hand?
Yes, completely. Self-play sits alongside normal playing, never in place of it. Sit down and play whenever you like — the piano behaves exactly as it always has.
How often does it need servicing?
Very occasionally — most clients need nothing beyond their normal piano servicing schedule. We’re always on hand if anything ever needs attention.
Is there a warranty?
Yes. Every installation is covered by warranty, and we’re a phone call away for the lifetime of your ownership.
Does it affect how the piano plays by hand?
No. Touch, tone and action all feel exactly as they did before — the system only adds the ability to play itself, it doesn’t change how the piano responds to a real player.
Can I see the self-play system once it's fitted?
It’s fitted to be invisible in normal use — no visible hardware, no change to the piano’s look. If you’re curious, we’re happy to show you where everything sits during a visit or in the workshop.
With a self-play system fitted, is my piano no longer acoustic — has it become digital?
No. Your piano remains a genuine acoustic instrument — real hammers striking real strings, producing real sound. Self-play simply moves the keys for you; nothing about the piano’s construction or sound production becomes digital.
