Why Do Edelweiss Use Abel Hammers?

Edelweiss Pianos are proud to be a British piano manufacturer renowned for the sonorous European tone of our instruments.

Warm, pleasant and typically more mellow than the what are known as ‘Asian’ sounding instruments: every component of every Edelweiss Self-Playing Piano has been deliberately and carefully specified by our master piano technicians.

That is why we choose to use Abel hammers: manufactured in Germany to the most exacting of standards, Abel have a reputation for excellence in the piano industry and are the perfect choice for our Edelweiss Artiste specification instruments. To understand why these premium hammers work so well with Edelweiss Pianos, we spoke with Lewis our Senior Action Technician.

“We use the Abel ‘Natural Felt’ hammers for our top-specification Edelweiss pianos because they are easier to work with, highly customisable and better quality than other hammers we have trialled in the past. Their production process is very flexible, I can easily specify the exact weight I want and they always produce a warm mellow sound which is exactly what we want with our pianos.

But for us, choosing Abel is about more than just the sound – it’s the whole play-ability of our self-playing pianos that we are taking into account: with Abel the specific weights and totally custom hammers are possible ensuring that we can perfectly set-up any one of our bespoke pianos exactly to our customers individual requirements, both in terms of sound and weight of the whole action”

Founding partner and Production Director, Mark Norman, further adds: “Abel hammers do produce a richer sound in our pianos, their felts are not so hard allowing us to fully produce the European Tone that is particularly suited to the Edelweiss persona … they’re consistently excellent quality that we can rely on to provide a consistent tone”
