Initially designed as a way to showcase our colour and material collection in an interesting and eye-catching way, The Original began life as a showroom sample piece, not as a piano intended to be purchased.
But that is not the story that unfolded.

The palette was carefully chosen from our collection at the time, bringing together ten intense colours including red, magenta, aqua, bright yellow, cobalt and orange, alongside two striking veneers – burl walnut and Macassar – a transparent lid and brass hardware.
The eclecticism extended to the form. Three completely different leg designs were used, each intended to show a different option available to our clients.
17 elements; it shouldn’t have worked. But in the hands of head designer, Mark Norman, 17 elements became a single stunning composition.
The result was contemporary, asymmetric and exciting.

We placed the piano in our Harrods showroom and the response was immediate. People stopped in front of it. And they wanted to take it home.
So The Original Edelweiss icon was born.
While the first palette continues to be enduringly popular, the eclectic design has unlocked endless possibilities. A royal palette. A collection of soft pastel hues. Striking black and yellow. Matte grey and bronze. A symphony of pale greens. We’ve added hand-carved ornate legs and explored countless combinations of colour, material and form.
A piano that never fails to stop people in their tracks.
Pretty special for a piano created – almost – by accident.
